Arona

The «Arona» was a Spanish merchant ship that used to sail among the Canary Islands transporting all kinds of cargo. Today it lies on its starboard side on a sandy bottom at a depth of 35m. In 12 a fire broke out in her engine room and after all the crew had been evacuated the vessel was towed back to the harbour. 2 miles away from it, though, she sank. This large merchant ship -100m of length and 15m of breadth- lies battered by storms that have swept its deck and opened up gaps in the upper parts of her hull. Anchored in the middle of a sandy area, it has become a refuge for a great variety of species, sheltering great shoals of bogues, damselfish and even bastard grunts.

In its shadowy hull we’ll find a large number of small corals and anemones. It lies in an area of frequent currents, which have fostered the growth of gorgones and sponges, as a result of which the wreck’s metal has acquired a rather colourful appearance, specially her deck and turrets.
